Street Youth

There are 300 to 2,000 youth living on the streets of Spokane at any given time. The youth are on the streets because of abuse (physical, emotional, and sexual) and many others are thrown out of their homes. There are some that leave home out of rebellion, but few of these kids remain on the streets for an extended period of time. The homeless youth end up downtown where drugs, crime, and sexual exploitation are the norm. Without a support base, they turn to prostitution, drug dealing and using, pimping, theft, and panhandling in order to make the money necessary for survival. If positive adult role models don't intervene, these kids will likely continue this abusive and criminal behavior into adulthood.

Every child we come in contact with is different. They are all involved in street life, but have various needs ranging from a caring, listening ear to permanent stable housing. Since there is such a wide range of needs it is hard for us to list them all, so we have tried to compile a modest list of some common needs we encounter everyday.

  • Housing- safe, economical or free
  • Jobs- Either career oriented or part-time to start off with
  • Job training- Specific skills taught to help secure career jobs, and help filling out resumes and interviewing skills
  • Daycare- Safe, loving environment where clients' children can be left while the client is working, in school or tutoring at CCW or following through on legal obligations.
  • Families- Christian families who are willing and able to take in a youth on the street to help them through the process of exiting street life.
  • Supplies- Hygiene packet items, clothing room items, school and tutoring items…
  • Tutoring- These kids need adults who are able and willing to tutor them in all subject areas that will help them complete their GED or get their diploma.
  • Counseling- Professionals are needed to help walk kids who are willing through the process of reconciliation with their parents, and what other issues they need to deal with.
  • Christian men and women to show them the love of Christ. Find out how to become a volunteer
